This LandShift Nature-based Solutions library collects case studies that demonstrate the potential of Nature-Based Solutions. This is the first release of the library; further updates, enhancements, and expanded functionality will be introduced throughout the lifecycle of the LandShift project.
You can explore the library in several ways, depending on what you are looking for:
• Apply filters using the left-hand panel.
Filters allow you to navigate the case studies within the library by Ecosystem Type, Land-Use Challenge, and NbS Approach. You can apply any combination of these, from a single filter category or all three together.
• Browse without filters.
If no filters are applied, the case study panel shows all case studies available in the library, which can be opened and explored by clicking on their title.
• Use the search bar.
The search bar at the top-left of the page lets you navigate case studies by typing keywords for specific projects, locations, or ecosystems. The search bar can be used in combination with the filters to help refine your results.
• Navigate between case studies without losing your place.
When you select a case study, your filters and search terms remain active. This makes it easy to move between different case studies that match the same criteria.
• Access detailed information.
Each case study provides clear information about the NbS intervention, along with links to high-quality sources for deeper reading and guidance on related topics.
This library is designed to help you discover practical, real-world examples of Nature-Based Solutions and understand how they have been implemented across Europe. Whether you are exploring broad themes or looking for highly specific cases, the filters and search tools are built to support intuitive and flexible navigation.
The case studies in this library have been collected from a wide range of sources, and selected based on alignment with specific criteria that define a NbS. These selection criteria are based on IUCN Global Standards for NbS, as well as specific project considerations, focusing on three questions:
1. Does the NbS case study sufficiently reflect NbS criteria?
2. Is the NbS case study relevant to the LandShift project context and goals?
3. Is there enough high-quality, accessible information about the NbS case study?
The main guiding principle for case study selection is the IUCN definition of Nature-based Solutions:
“Actions to protect, sustainably manage, and restore natural or modified ecosystems that address societal challenges effectively and adaptively, while simultaneously providing human well-being and biodiversity benefits.” (IUCN - INbS)
This main definition was framed into multiple criteria for case studies assessment toward inclusion in this library. Specifically, for this library, case studies must be implemented, recently, physically in a visitable, rural or peri-urban area in Europe. We also prioritise cases aligned with the context and ambitions of the project’s Living Spaces.
Each case study provides a snapshot of the core aspects of the intervention together with links to sources that provide more detailed information and overarching guidance on core topics.
If you are aware of case studies which would make an appropriate and valuable inclusion in the library you can suggest them here.
The LandShift project works together with five European regions to develop climate-resilient land management strategies that balance climate change mitigation, sustainable food and biomass production, biodiversity protection, and community well-being — all while aligning with the values of the New European Bauhaus to ensure that Europe’s landscapes are not only sustainable but also inclusive and inspiring.
The project will design roadmaps and formulate regional strategies for achieving balanced objectives toward sustainable land use, supported by documented New European Bauhaus (NEB)-aligned Nature-Based Solutions, tailored to address specific land challenges, incorporating input from local communities and regional authorities. This Nature-based solutions library functions as a source of inspiration and actionable guiding tool for that process.
